For Ela Boyd’s Prism series, she questions “How can a form be regarded as actual?” Within the series, each prism form exists within multiple modalities simultaneously–the potential form before it was actualized, the tangible object and the intentional image of consciousness as mediated through media. With images of prismatic light mapped onto volumes of actual light, appearances and presences merge. The image shifts from representational to actual. Using light to challenge one’s perceptual ability to accurately apprehend a determinate visual horizon, the prisms’ dimensional character expands and collapses spatially. Multiple emanations of each form travel through media and consciousness serving to decentralize the object.
